Finally got listed in Dmoz

Top: Society: People: Personal Homepages: IFor more than a year I was waiting for my blog to be listed in Open Directory Project which is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. I got listed after submitting the site for the second time. This is a moment for me to celebrate.

My webiste is listed under Society: People: Personal Homepages: Weblogs: I

There are various good points to be listed in dmoz

1. 100s of mirror sites use Dmoz RDF file to create their own directory, so one link from dmoz is equal to 1000 links from all the sites which use dmoz RDF including a link from the google directory which is a RDF dump of Dmoz

2. Dmoz is called the best expert directory and yahoo has made it clear it definetely like sites listed in dmoz, Google also feels sites listed in dmoz as authority and gives a small plus for that site

3. Dmoz data is used by the google directory and google directory is an important listing, google directory shows the pagerank display next to it and sites listed there can check their pagerank values and how their site is performing by checking the categories where their site is listed

4. Dmoz directory listings perform well in search engines, dmoz categories rank in various places so they get good search engine traffic and all those traffic are returned to the sites listed in that category, so a good top level category listing in dmoz will give good targeted traffic, Though the traffic is not huge it does drive some useful traffic

5. Dmoz categories have good pagerank, Those pagerank is inherited from their root level pagerank, Dmoz usually has pagerank 9 and more of the top level categories have pagerank range from 4 to 8, Google whose foundation algorithm which was built around pagerank likes links from dmoz categories which has high pagerank

6. Dmoz links are themed links, those links originate from relevant pages and it is very good when it comes to related pages

7. Good anchor text from an expert/authority site, If you get a good anchor text when listed in dmoz it is a very good boost for that particular keyword or phrase

I took the above 7 points from this website 🙂 . If you guys are doing seo stuff see that your website is listed in dmoz and as early as possible. Getting listed there is not so easily. While listing your website you have to choose the category properly. You have to follow the guidelines for submission. Each category has an editor in my case Whpayne was the editor. If the editor feels that your site can be listed in that particular directory and your site will be added else nothing. Have fun 😉

  1. Dunno if you’ll let that announced here, but i want to announce that i have started a new free directory , called new-dmoz.org. Maybe it will grow up as dmoz is. And no sudden death around. It’s a well maintained website, even i just started the directory.

  2. Unfortunetly, it will take forever to get listed into the Google Directory. My site was added to Dmoz over a year ago and it still isn’t listed in the Google Directory. Best of Luck though.

  3. The site that use RDF files to create their own directory have not been counted towards PR for at least two years.

DMOZ links are not valuable. In fact, they might have no value at all.

There are plenty of sites that have been listed in DMOZ for over 2 years, and have no other link. Many of these sites have ZERO PR, yet are are listed on PR5-6 DMOZ pages, that have less than 50 links. Since these sites have no other link, you can measure the value of the DMOZ link directly. The DMOZ link is not enough to upgrade a website from PR0 to PR1. That’s a very weak link, an unnaturally weak link given the high PR of the page the link sits on.

DMOZ is viewed as so worthless by its owner, AOL, that no backups are felt to be necessary, and a 2-month outage/blackout is taken in stride.

Google hasn’t refreshed its clone of DMOZ in two years. That’s a hint.

  4. Ok, peeps.. i have got something small to tell. I think you guys know bookmarking on sites like digg and mixx can aid in recieving increased backlinks, PR, and traffic. Well.. some weeks ago i was invited for beta-testing a new tool that can automatically submit websites to the highest authority social bookmarking websites. I have to tell this piece of software is VERY NICE and saved me alot of time allready. It even solves captcha codes! The creator just launched the coming-soon site@ (bookmarkwiz . com) or you can just open google and search for “bookmarkwiz” to get some more info. In IM and SEO the key to success is to stay in front of your competition.. and with soclal bookmarking automation tools like bookmarkWiz I will dominate other marketers every day! What do you guys think?

  5. I edit a category in Dmoz. I find that 95% of the people don’t read the dmoz guidelines. They either submit to the wrong category or they don’t get the title and description right. My category currently has 520 websites that have to be reviewed and growing every day. If i’m going to edit any of them take a guess which ones I’ll do first. My advice..read the guidelines, build a website with at least 20 pages of text and submit to the relevant category and your website will be listed in no time. i’ve listed sites that submitted in less than a month.

  6. @Julian What you said is so true. When I submitted my blog for the first time I did the same mistake. Then I resubmitted after a long wait and I got it approved.

These days lot of SEO experts says Dmoz has no value to SEO. I am not sure how much truth in it. I think they are just desperate to get it listed and they could not get it through.

  7. Hi Imathiaz. Seo’rs don’t know what they’re talking about.Dmoz is the biggest open directory in the world. Not only that they only accept quality and unique websites not just any site that’s looking to rank well to make a buck. Dmoz currently has a PR8. Google South Africa only has a PR7. That means that Google it self sees Dmoz as a more important website than Google South Africa. Imagine getting a link from Google South Africa and what that would do to your rankings. Now add an extra PR to that and you get Dmoz. Google looks at the age and authority of a website. Dmoz has been around since 1998 which makes it old and has a PR8 which makes it sort of like a general in the army. You do the math bud. Anyhow….glad you got into Dmoz. Why don’t you become an editor? We’re so swamped with work and could use more workers. Just a thought.

  8. I edit a few categories. I also find that most of the webmasters don’t read the guidelines so they either submit to the wrong category or they don’t fill in the correct title and description. Another problem I picked up was that most websites submitted don’t have detailed addresses of where their companies are situated. I first browse through to the contact page to see if they have before I waste my time running through the rest of the website. You snooze you loose…

  9. I disagree with what you say Albert B. The PR of a website is important but it isn’t everything. My one website has a PR0 and is ranking for most of it’s most competitive keywords in it’s niche like: kitchens, kitchen cupboards, diy kitchen cupboards, diy kitchens, bedroom cupboards etc. My site is on the 1st page of google sa for all those keywords and it has a PR0. Another thing about Dmoz is that there are allot of other directories that mirror all the pages of Dmoz. That means when you are listed with Dmoz you get listed with them and allot of them have PR5-PR7. No matter how you look at it your site is better off being listed with Dmoz than not.

  10. Hi Rohit

I’m so glad for you. I had a look at your website and saw that you put allot of hard work into it.We’re looking for quality website with allot of content not a bunch of sales sites. Good job.

  13. Informative article that you have. I found a new one the other day. They look open for business, but very similar to linkedin.com with more of a social business directory look and feel. Nice clean interface though. It’s at SocialTerrain.com
